Tom & Jerry (Tom and Jerry) is a series of American animated shorts created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera focused on the rivalry between the two protagonists, Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse; has had worldwide distribution and is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed series going on to win seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Film, equaling Walt Disney’s Merry Symphonies with the most awards in that category. Tom & Jerry became the highest-grossing animated film series ever, surpassing the Looney Tunes.
